Pulse – A feedback tool that works
An employee survey
that actually works
For over two years, I contributed to this project as part of a dynamic cross-functional team, utilizing my diverse skill set to enhance both product design and brand development.
My focus extended beyond mere feature delivery; I prioritized creating an exceptional user experience throughout the entire design process, from initial concept through execution. Typical UX tasks I engaged in included conducting user research, creating user personas, developing wireframes, and performing usability testing to validate our designs. Additionally, I took an active role in shaping the Pulse brand by developing and refining its visual identity, ensuring consistency and resonance with our target audience.

80 questions
and nothing changed
The key players in this project started developing Pulse while they were working for Swisscom. At that time, an employee survey was in place that asked employees about every detail that could potentially affect their satisfaction and engagement. The result was a very long questionnaire and the survey caused quite a bit of frustration.
Many questions, little effect. So much frustration and waste did not seem appropriate. So they asked: “What if there were a tool that makes it easier for everyone in the company to do a good job?” They were not able to find such a tool—that is why we started to develop Pulse.

The essential insight
At the beginning of the project, we assumed that a modern survey (short and concise) and a timely software solution (real-time results for everyone) would be enough. But the more we looked into the subject, the more we realised: If we really wanted to create a new method that does the trick, we’d have to change some very fundamental elements.
If employee feedback is to lead to tangible changes, it must be available where it has the most significant impact: in the teams. After all, they know best what the results of a survey mean and which improvement measures are possible and useful for them. To properly work with the results, they need to be able to both view and discuss their colleagues’ comments. This, in turn, is only possible in a meaningful way if the survey feedback is not anonymous within the team.

Getting
Buy-in
Our success in convincing our stakeholders mainly came from the approach we took.
We systematically translated our ideas into prototypes as quickly as possible and tested them with our future users.
We put many different variants of our method and software tool through their paces, getting feedback from over 500 employees and 35 teams.

See it
in action
The result of our development is a digital survey tool that helps teams improve their collaboration and work environment based on feedback.
With Pulse, everybody will achieve their full potential with: Actionable and transparent feedback instead of anonymous venting Self-responsible learning and improvement instead of top-down actionism Results in real time for all instead of months later for a few Since 2017, Pulse has been developed, operated and marketed by Creaholic.
